There is something about spring time that makes us want to start anew. It is a good reason to do a big clean – one that is often put off. The primary aim we should have when doing a spring clean is to create a place for everything to go, and then put everything in its place. Storage and organisation are key! Then, through the rest of the year, we need to keep putting everything where it is supposed to be – which sounds easy, but is often not. And that’s why we need to do a spring clean once a year. When that time comes, here are our seven spring cleaning tips to help you conquer the task.

1. Take it all out
This will most likely be the most time consuming and messy step in spring cleaning, but it is important. Take out all the “stuff” that you have in boxes, drawers, cupboards, cabinets and fridges.
2. Clean the storage items
Now that all the “stuff” is out, give the boxes, drawers and other storage items a thorough clean. You’ll be surprised how sticky fridges get, how crammed boxes get and how dusty drawers get.
3. Start sorting
Take time to go through all the “stuff”. Perhaps you will decide to donate, sell or throw away some items. Then you need to start putting things that are alike together.
4. Store items away
Now it’s time to put things back in the storage items. You may find that the storage items you had (and that were cleaned) are enough, or you may require more storage items to organise everything. When purchasing more storage items like boxes, bags and containers try to find transparent options as this helps you to easily keep track of what you have.
5. Go digital
Paper documents, letters and notes pile up quickly. Firstly, go through everything and throw away (in a recycle bin) everything you don’t need anymore, especially if you have a digital version of it. It is best to keep any tax-related or important documents that you may need for at least five years. Anything older than that you should be able to get rid of. Secondly, consider scanning or photographing the documents to create a digital version and then, if you can, throw away the paper version. Lastly, for those important papers that remain, file them with clear labels.
5. Invest in racking and/or shelving
Now that you have all your “stuff” in storage items or filed away, you may require a place to put everything that still allows for easy access. Installing racking and/or shelving is the perfect solution. If you already have shelving in place then you will need to give the shelves a good clean before putting everything away. Don’t forget to clean right at the top!
6. Invest in storage hook systems
There may be some other items that are better stored away using storage hook systems, e.g bikes, gardening tools and cleaning equipment. Storage hook systems are so practical to quickly and easily put these slightly bulkier items away. Remember to give those items, especially muddy bikes, a wash before putting them on the hooks.
7. Remember items that are never stored away
When spring cleaning, we often overlook items that are never really stored away, especially appliances. It is important to thoroughly clean heavily used appliances like fridges, toasters, ovens, stoves, microwaves, kettles and coffee machines in home kitchens and business canteens. Also think about air conditioners, heaters, fans, lamps and furniture items that require deep cleaning at least once a year, if not more.
