Securing your home: 4 places to ensure are burglar proof before you head off on holiday

As the summer holidays approach, burglar-proofing might be the last thing on your mind. We know you are excited to set your out-of-office and head off on holiday but before you go, it’s crucial to check your home is secure. Over the past 25 years we at King Brands have been learning all there is to know about physical burglar proofing to constantly improve our products. We know that burglars are experts at finding the weak points in home security, but so are we. We suggest you take a critical look at your home security and any forgotten openings. To help you with this, we have compiled a list of 4 areas in your home to check before you head off out of town:

  1. Large central window panes

Many South African homes feature a large window pane, flanked by two small side windows. Many times, the windows that open are often fitted with burglar bars, leaving the large central window pane unprotected. Criminals are not worried about noise when homeowners are on holiday and neighbourhoods are largely deserted and these large windows offer quick and easy access. Horizontal burglar bars and window fixtures are ideal over large windows.

  1. Windows set above doors and high up

Small, sealed windows add light and architectural interest to homes and buildings. While these may be high up and hard to access, they could also be the easiest way into your home if they are not adequately secured. Adding transparent or clear burglar bars can be enough of a deterrent to keep criminals from gaining access this way. Modern clear bars do not detract from the architectural aesthetic and allow the light in.

  1. Passage ways and staircases

With security companies on call and advanced digital security systems, criminals often have a small window of time to do their work. Once criminals gain access to your home, you can delay their access to where your more valuable items are kept by adding either a trellis or swing security gate to your passages or on a staircase in your home. These security measures can slow burglars down and give your security company time to respond.

  1. Cottage style wooden doors and windows

Cottage style wooden doors and windows feature a wooden lattice inset with small glass panes. Classic and older homes often feature this charming style. Due to wood and glass construction, these windows and doors need to be fitted with security barriers. Our cottage style and horizontal burglar bars are custom made to exact specifications, ensuring they are both secure and not an eyesore. Our comprehensive range of custom gates can be used over doors and entryways to compliment the style of burglar bar you have installed.

At King Brands, we have been manufacturing barriers to suit all sorts of spaces since 1999.
