What is the purpose of a trellis door?

A trellis or treillage is an architectural structure, usually made from an open framework or lattice of interwoven or intersecting pieces of wood, bamboo or metal. Interestingly, it is traditionally made to support and display climbing plants (originally intended to support vine stock). The trellis door we’re talking about here is made of metal, but it doesn’t have anything to do with plants. What do South Africans mean when we refer to a trellis door, and what is its purpose?

What is a trellis door?

A door refers to any hinged, sliding or revolving barrier at the opening to a building, room, vehicle, cupboard or designated storage area. The entryway is either obstructed or unobstructed by closing or opening the door. With this definition in mind, a trellis door, in the South African context, is a metal sliding barrier that takes on the appearance of a trellis when expanded. You can get static trellis barriers that do not open or close, so are therefore not included in our definition of a trellis door. The choice between a retractable versus static security barrier depends on the unique requirements of the space. Let’s delve into the requirements a trellis door fulfils.

What is its purpose?

1. Security

The main purpose of a trellis door is security. It is installed as a barrier to keep people and possessions safe. it needs to be strong to fulfil its primary purpose. There are a lot of trellis door options on the market, so how do you choose the best one? We believe there are ten things to look for.

2. Practicality

In conjunction with security, trellis doors are also purposefully practical.  Certainly, the main advantage of trellis doors, i.e. retractable security gates and barriers, is that they are there when you need them and gone when you don’t. The fact that trellis doors are almost invisible when they are open is definitely a pro to having an expandable security door. They can also be installed just about anywhere: front doors, internal doors, sliding doors or windows, patios, hatches, shopfronts and more.

Apart from fulfilling its purpose as a practical security solution, trellis doors have many advantages.
